3DS objects are always composed of triangles.  The Wavefront format
is quite similar to LightWave, when it comes to what kinds of
polygons are possible.  LW allows 1- and 2-gons, while Wavefront
uses separate commands for those plus an ordinary 'f' face command
for n-gons like those in LW.

All the version of FD Painter I have since Painter 2 have run under
NT. Painter 4 is a 32bit app and also runs under NT. The software is
still buggy as ever, this piece of software crashes more than any
Windows program I have. My machine is a Dell XPS 100 w/64MB RAM so
it has enough power. Its just that Painter is essentially Mac code
with GUI extensions to run under Windows.

I was hoping that Painter4 would have been a re-write of the code
like Adobe has done with Photoshop 3, Premiere 4, Pagemaker 6, and
Illustrator 6. The 32bit version of Painter 4 crashes as much as the
16bit versions.

I think this is the best soulution.  I got a disk with both TT and Postscript
fonts (2001 of them) for $14 at computer city a few months ago.  These work
fine for making LW objects.  These type of CD-ROMs are fairly easy to find.

These arguments make sense, but  NewTek anounced that they would be selling at
the same price on all platforms a year ago.  Some folks bought Alphas only to
find the software price going by 100% unexpectedly.  It breeds ill will when
you can't trust what Newtek says.  Its a common joke here.  Notice all the
"two week" comments.

I am making a poster in Lightwave. I've got a Pentium 133 with 32 Mb RAM
but it seems like it's impossible to render pictures larger than
1280x1024. It's a quite simple scene with 20000 polygons.

How much more RAM do I need for 2500x1800?
Why does not 100 Mb swapfile help?
How can I split the image in smaller parts and then join them semlessly?
Is more physical RAM the only solution?

You might try looking at the subst command.  It is supposed to be supported
under NT.  I haven't seen anything like it under Win 95 though.

Yep - there are things AmigaDos does much better than Windows.  Arexx is a
beautiful idea.  BUT there are things that Windows does better than AmigaDos
as well.

Windows NT does have the subst command.  It is NOT as powerful as assign on
the Amiga, but it may be enough to get somebody by.  Oddly, this command only
exists on Win95 from within a DOS session.

Does anybody know if the new #9 board will speed up the graphics in LW? I
know it supports OpenGL but what about rendering? If LW ever supports
OpneGl This might be the card to get. I heard it does 800k+ triangles for
under $400.

Backup your 3.1 disks and install Win95.  If you hate it - you can go back
rather painlessly.  Operating system preferences seem to be like religious
beliefs.  You have to form your own.

I do like these folks. Good service, their prices are fair, good technical
advice.

You might also try Merle Ilgenfritz/Wild-Eyed Video ([e-mail]). I think
I saw his latest price at $719. I've also had only good experiences with
him...

on this weeks 'Anti-gravity' room on the scifi channel (if you cant
find a schedule, they have a web page) they have a good long segment
on the making of reboot.
its on saturday and sunday, the fifth and sixth.... a bit before noon
eastern time both days i believe.

I guess I was a little luckier when I was a subscriber...I'd ALWAYS
get at least 2 sometimes 3 copies of the same issue---one addressed to

I don't know if there are any other competing tapes available, but I was
pretty disappointed by the Pyrotechniques tape.

I had watched the 2 Ron Thornton spaceship tapes just before, and found
them full of good tips with detailed explanations and a little humour
to keep the wheels rolling. And once Ron was finished, the resulting
spaceship looked really good.

Brad Peebler's Pyrotechniques methods were not nearly as professional
looking.

Every time he started to explain a new technique, I'd sit there and
wonder how he was going to get such a simple effect to look good.

Every time he had finished and the results were shown, I'd sit there
and see that he hadn't succeeded, and wonder why I'd paid $50 to see
something that looked so cheesy.

The tape will give you a number of basic ideas and starting points
that you can then expand on to create your own effects, but I've
seen better tutorials in Lightwave Pro magazine and on the LightSpeed
tapes.

The LightSpeed tutorial on procedural fire (by Dave Warner?) was
particularly good, and looked much better than anything on the
Pyrotechniques tape.

You might consider buying the new Lightwave Pro compilation book and a
LightSpeed subscription instead.

I'm back from this long off-line vacation. Great to see you again, and happy new year!

While running LW 4.0 on Win NT I get an heap error 6018 while rendering. LW than
disappears.
I'm using a Packard Bell P133, 40 megs RAM, built-in video card (Cirus logic I
believe).

Anyone encountered this?

Sure, got a bunch of them.  66 MHz 601's 80 MHz 601's 133 Mhz 604's.  And they are
fast.  That's what I said, "up till very recently and is still pretty true today).
But it sounds like you're assuming that all people do is draw with photoshop.  And also, that
everybody uses video resolution.

A gaussian blur on a 2k resolution image takes a few seconds on and Indy or a PPC 604.  This
can and does translate into minute(s) on slower Macs and PCs.

There are numerous filters for Photoshop that take <EM>Considerable</EM> time at that
resolution.

And our Indys are VERY much faster in manipulating 2D images than any of our PPC Macs (all of
which have stock (non-accelerated) Apple graphics boards.

So yes, PPC's are fast chips, but are are choked by MacOS.

There are no low cost solutions. Either a single frame recorder (in
excess of $1000.00 or a PAR with good HD in excess of $2,000.00 thats
your choice.

That's interesting, because the version I have (ver. 2 w/ X2) doesn't
run. Any ideas? I'll still be getting the new version, eventually (it's
sooo much fun not be able to find work...).

YES! You can use the 1084 or 1084s monitors with the A4000T. But dont
forget that it would be LOW RES. ie 640x200 (256 in PAL). OR flikker
like HELL in Hi RES ie 640x400 (512 in PAL).

If you are getting LW 4.0 (which I am told but dont know for sure) is
supposed to support CyberGfx. So you could get the CV64 and use it on
a Multi Sync Monitor with higher Res.
